Christian Bodies

Blurb Book

Photographs taken of ‘old master’ paintings in European museums. Depictions of cruelty are central to the iconography of Christianity, especially in the Catholic tradition. Homoerotic representations of physical pain inflicted on the masculine body abound. The typology begins with Christ’s Passion but extends to the martyrs, especially St Sebastian whose body is phallically penetrated by pagan arrows.
